Coach and Pianist
The pianist and conductor Klaus Sallmann studied piano, composition and conducting in Karlsruhe and Vienna with Sontraud Speidel, Dinorah Varsi, Nikita Magaloff, Wolfgang Rihm, Isang Yun and Sergiu Celibidache.
Since 2007 he is principal guest conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonico del Mediterraneo Valencia with whom he produced La Cenerentola, Hänsel and Gretel, Don Pasquale and Don Giovanni. Sallmann has also conducted Berlioz’ Les Troyens at the Palau de les Arts Valencia, Die Zauberflöte at the Vienna Volksoper, and Britten’s Albert Herring at Hamburg State Opera. In concert, he has conducted a.o. Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Landesorchester Schleswig-Holstein, Brandenburg State Orchestra and Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne.
Since 1999 he is principal assistant conductor to Zubin Mehta at the Bavarian State Opera, in Valencia, at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and in Tel Aviv. Klaus Sallmann has also assisted James Levine (for Wagner’s Ring and Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival and the Metropolitan Opera), Markus Stenz (L’Upupa at the Salzburg Festival), Claudio Abbado (recording sessions with Deutsche Grammophon). He maintains an active working relationship with the Teatro San Carlo, Lisbon and Baden-Baden Festival Theatre.
Klaus Sallmann began his professional career as repetiteur at the Aalto Theatre Essen in 1992, and worked in the same capacity at the Hamburg State Opera from 1993-1999, when he became Studienleiter at the Bavarian State Opera.
He has appeared in recitals with Edita Gruberova, Waltraud Meier, Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Peter Seiffert, Matti Salminen at the Wiener Festwochen, the Hamburg Music Festival, the Festival del Mediterrani (Valencia) , as well as in Taiwan, Japan, Australia and the US.
His teaching credits include classes at the Centre de perfeccionament Placido Domingo in Valencia as well as a guest professorship for the interpretation of opera and Lied at Tel Aviv University.
