Voice Lessons and Master Classes
KS Thomas Moser studied at the Richmond Professional Institute, Virginia, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and at the Music Academy of the West with Martial Singher, Gérard Souzay, and Lotte Lehmann. He began his career in 1975 at the Landestheater Graz and shortly thereafter gave his début both at the Bavarian and the Vienna State Opera, where he was a company member until 1991. In Vienna he sang all important lyric tenor roles from Mozart to Strauss.
At the same time, Thomas Moser was regularly singing at all the major international theatres, such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, the Opéra de Paris, the Covent Garden Opera London, the Salzburg Summer and Easter Festivals, Chicago and San Francisco.
From the early 90s on, Thomas Moser gradually extended his repertoire and made successful debuts in German dramatic roles such as Florestan in Beethoven’s Fidelio, Wagner’s Erik, Lohengrin, Parsifal as well as Bacchus and Emperor in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Frau ohne Schatten. In 2003 he sang his first Tristan in Vienna in an acclaimed production conducted by Christian Thielemann at the Vienna State Opera that was also released on CD by Deutsche Grammophon.
Thomas Moser’s repertoire also encompasses important roles in French opera, such as the title roles in Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust, Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, and Don José in Bizet’s Carmen. He is also noted for his portrayals in classic and contemporary modern music, such as the tenor role in Berio’s Un re in ascolto, which he created at the Salzburg Summer Festival 1985 or Aron in Schönberg’s Moses und Aron. And Moser has made his mark in such complicated roles as Pfitzner’s Palestrina and Paul in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt. Among his most recent successes are Herod in Strauss’s Salome and Britten’s Peter Grimes.
During a career now well into its fourth decade, Thomas Moser has worked with all major conductors, from Herbert von Karajan, Sir Georg Solti and Leonard Bernstein to Daniel Barenboim, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Claudio Abbado, up to Daniele Gatti, Philippe Jordan und Christian Thielemann. His work is extensively documented on CDs and DVDs from all major recording labels.
Thomas Moser is also a much sought after recitalist and soloist on the concert podium. His repertoire ranges Baroque to contemporary, from lyric to heroic parts, from Bachs Passions to Schönbergs Gurrelieder and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde.
Thomas Moser has been nominated Kammersänger by both the Vienna and the Bavarian State Opera. He is also honorary member of the Vienna State Opera and was awarded the coveted Premio Franco Abbiati for his interpretation of Florestan at La Scala. From 1997-2001 he held a professorship at the University for Music and Theatre in Munich. He is a jury member of many important international singing competitions.
